Topological properties and aromatherapy mechanisms of resting-state functional brain networks in subthreshold depression
To analyze the topological properties of functional brain network at the resting state in patients with subthreshold depression (SD)
and explore the mechanism of aromatherapy in SD patients.
Methods

A total of 35 SD patients and 35 healthy controls were selected. After removing shedding subjects
30 SD patients and 30 healthy controls were selected. Both groups received aromatherapy intervention for 15 to 20 min. BDI scale score

After intervention
the score of BDI scale in both groups was lower than that before intervention
the difference was statistically significant (

and the decrease was more obvious in SD group

0.05). In the range of 0.05 ≤ sparsity ≤0.40
the two groups are all economically efficient small-world networks (

1). Before intervention
Lp and λ values in SD group were significantly higher than those in the control group
while σvalues were significantly lower
with statistical significance (

0.05). After intervention
the DC value of SD group increased in the left inferior frontal gyrus region (

0.001)
and significantly decreased in the premotor cortex and supplementary motor area region (

0.001).
Conclusion

In SD patients
the small world attribute of the resting-state brain functional network is reduced. Aromatherapy can improve negative emotions
and the mechanism may be related to the coordination of brain region activities.
