Exploring the application of "nourishing yin to resolve blood stasis" in the treatment of liver fibrosis
Liver fibrosis refers to the diffuse over-deposition and abnormal distribution of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Though the term is not seen in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theories
it can be categorized into "accumulation-gathering" and "hypochondriac pain" based on its main symptoms. Yin deficiency is defined as deficiency of essence
blood and body fluids
blood stasis is a pathological state of poor blood circulation or obstruction. The two can influence each other. Liver fibrosis is a syndrome of deficiency in origin and excess in superficiality. Yin deficiency and blood stasis is the primary pathogenesis. The treatment of "nourishing yin to remove blood stasis" should be adopted clinically which promotes the disappearance of stasis by nourishing yin liquids
eliminating pathogens without harming healthy qi. This therapy is suitable for the middle and late stages of liver fibrosis
which consists of the methods of nourishing blood and emolliating the liver
and nourishing the liver and kidney. In addition
they should be used in combination with other treatments according to the syndrome.
