Objective To investigate the correlation between syndrome characteristics of senile bone loss and bone mineral density (BMD). Method The Chinese medical syndromes were evaluated in 91 patients with senile bone loss
and other 39 normal old men were chosen as the control group. The statistical methods
such as Pearson correlation analysis
were used to analyse the data. Result The most common Chinese medical syndromes in senile bone loss were the syndrome of deficiency of kidney essence
syndrome of phlegm obstruction
syndrome of qi insufficiency and syndrome of collateral obstructed by blood stasis. There was significant differencse in the syndrome of deficiency of kidney essence and syndrome of phlegm obstruction compared with the control group
and the syndrome of deficiency of kidney essence was correlated to BMD. The syndrome of deficiency of kidney essence and syndrome of phlegm obstruction had negative relations to the speed of sound (SOS) in ultrasonic
which meant the risk of senile bone loss would be greater when the integrals of the syndrome of deficiency of kidney essence and syndrome of phlegm obstruction were increasing. Conclusion BMD was correlated to the syndrome of deficiency of kidney essence and syndrome of phlegm obstruction
which proved these two syndromes could be seen objectively in senile bone loss.
